Shaheen Razvi – Biography

I was born in Hyderabad, India, and came to Britain in 1963 at the age of 5.  My formative years were spent in the north east of England.  The two BA (Hons) degrees secured respectively in Fine Art from Sunderland Polytechnic in 1981 and in Psychology from Durham University in 1989 provide a template for my focus over the following years: a career in the caring profession and maintaining an active interest in art.

The former involved further post-graduate studies: an MSc in Psychology from Stirling University in 1990 and a Diploma in Social Work in 1993. I had a career in social work and child protection and justice in Scotland until 2005, when I decided to devote more time to painting.

Initially specialising in portraiture, my art has also found inspiration from the social environment and enjoyed a dual expression, uniting the aesthetic with the political. My ethnic roots, combined with an awareness of social issues, have been reflected in a variety of projects undertaken and commissioned by the Community Relations Council in Glasgow between 1991 and 2000.

I have exhibited in Durham, Glasgow and Argyll and provided illustrations for various publishing projects.

I acknowledge the influence and inspiration gained from artists such as: Joan Eardley, Lucian Freud, Turner and Pierre Bonnard.

Since moving to Argyll in 2000, my painting has taken on a new direction – the Argyll/Scottish landscape. From my studio overlooking the Kilbrannon Sound, towards the Isle of Arran, my use and application of colour reflects the subtle hues of the elemental relationship, found in Scotland, between land, sea and sky.
